A Simple Outline

The Four Spiritual Laws

Just as physical laws govern the universe, so spiritual laws govern your relationship with God. Tap any reference to read it in full.

Law One

God loves you and created you to know Him personally.

References are linked to the Scriptures themselves, and should be read in context wherever possible.

God’s Love

“God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.”

God’s Plan

“Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”

What prevents us from knowing God personally?

Law Two

Man is sinful and separated from God, so we cannot know Him personally or experience His love.

Man is Sinful

“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

Man was created to have fellowship with God; but, because of his own stubborn self-will, he chose to go his own independent way, and fellowship with God was broken. This self-will — an attitude of either active rebellion or passive indifference — is an evidence of what the Bible calls sin.

Man is Separated

“The wages of sin is death” — spiritual separation from God.

Diagram: a great gulf separates a holy God from sinful man; arrows show man failing to reach God by his own efforts.

A great gulf separates the holy God from sinful man. The arrows show man continually trying to reach God through his own efforts — good works, philosophy, religion — but he inevitably fails. The third law explains the only way across.

Law Three

Jesus Christ is God’s only provision for man’s sin. Through Him alone we can know God personally.

He Died in Our Place

“God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

He Rose From the Dead

“Christ died for our sins … He was buried … He was raised on the third day … He appeared to Peter, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred …”

He is the Only Way to God

“Jesus said, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.’”

Diagram: the cross of Jesus Christ bridges the gulf between God and man.

God has bridged the gulf by sending His Son to die on the cross in our place, paying the penalty for our sins. Yet it is not enough only to know these truths…

Law Four

We must individually receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord; then we can know God personally.

We Must Receive Christ

“As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name.”

We Receive Christ Through Faith

“By grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast.” When we receive Christ, we experience a new birth.

We Receive Christ by Personal Invitation

[The words of Christ] “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him.”

Receiving Christ means turning to God from self (repentance) and trusting Christ to come into our lives — to forgive us and to make us what He wants us to be. It is not enough merely to agree that Jesus is the Son of God, nor only to feel an emotional stirring. We receive Him by faith, as an act of the will.

Which life best represents you now? Which would you want? You can receive Christ this moment by faith through prayer. He is not concerned with your eloquence, but with the attitude of your heart. You might pray something like this:

“Lord Jesus, I want to know You personally. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of the throne of my life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be.”

The Word

Scripture to Carry With You

A few passages for rest, for wisdom, and for the road. King James Version.

Matthew 11:28–30

The Invitation

[The words of Christ]

28Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Psalm 23

The Shepherd

1The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Psalm 1

Two Ways

1Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

3And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. 4The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

5Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 6For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

John 3:16

Romans 6:23

Romans 5:8

King James Version

6For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7For scarcely for a righteous man will one die… 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

1 Corinthians 15:3-6

King James Version

3For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 5And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: 6After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once…

John 14:6

King James Version

John 1:12

King James Version

11He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13Which were born… of God.

Ephesians 2:8,9

King James Version

John 3:1-8

King James Version

2…Nicodemus came to Jesus by night… 3Jesus answered, [The words of Christ] Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
